2018 Reading Goals

I'm linking this post up with Top Ten Tuesday over at That Artsy Reader Girl (previously at The Broke and the Bookish) because it's a list and who doesn't love lists? They're just so aesthetically pleasing.

For today, I'm doing that thing people do at the start of the year -
setting unrealistic goals and putting unnecessary pressure on myself for the year ahead so I can crash and burn with my targets around me and roll into the next year feeling like a complete and utter failure -
I'm feeling optimistic about my reading for 2018 and I want to manifest that into a series of little goals that I will most definitely accomplish!

So without further ado, here are all of my 2018 bookish resolutions...

Make Up With Contemporary
I have a love/hate relationship with contemporary books, and I don't read them nearly as often as I should. I want to change that in 2018...catching up on some backlisted contemporary as well as reading some of the glorious new releases this year.

Here are just a few I want to pick up...

Give Dem Series Some Attention
Like any self-respecting bookworm, I've had many many books sitting on my shelf for quite the while, and a fair few of those are series that I've been DYING to get to...but haven't yet. This year I want to knock some of those series off my TBR and finally see what all the fuss is about.

I'm coming for you babies....

Turn My Listening Ears On
Last year I really discovered the magic of audiobooks, and I want to keep utilizing that magic this year. I really enjoy audiobooks - and I'm getting through TWICE as many reads since I started listening to them.

If you have any audio recommendations definitely let me know!

Enjoy the Words
I have a tendency to rush things. As soon as I start a book I'm already thinking about the next one I'm going to pick up...and I DON'T LIKE THAT!! I want to slow down my reading, to appreciate the words on the page, the story being told, and the skill of the author - instead of reading to knock books off a tally that exists only in my head. I'm in a one-woman race with myself and I'd like to step out.

Buy Less...Read More
Just imagine Aaron Burr singing that and it is SO much more satisfying

Having been a member of Book Buyers Anonymous for the longest time now, I can say that while I have made significant improvement in the past few years, I still have the urge to buy waaaay more books than I can physically read.

While I will make no false promises that I won't buy any books in 2018 because seriously, who would believe THAT...I do want to work more on the books I already own instead of BUYING ALL THE BOOKS and having no place to even store them never mind read them.

I could go on at this all day, but the more goals I set for myself, the more likely I am to fail.

Am I right?

So that's all for now. Before I forget, I've set my Goodreads Challenge to 50 books again this year and I think that's achievable for me. I think I can stick at these goals, and in 2019 when future-Lauren looks back at this post she can give herself a big high-five and a pat on the back for her wonderful achievements. Also - don't forget to Follow my blog with Bloglovin so you can keep up to date as I fail miserably at all of these goals this year.

Aaaaaah...a girl can dream

What are your reading goals for 2018?
you set a Goodreads Challenge?

  1. I think this is a great set of goals because you seem to have kept them achievable (failed goals, ugh) and they're about enjoyment of books - format, genre, etc.Have a great reading year!

    1. I think people can put way too much pressure on themselves when it comes to reading and it takes all of the enjoyment out of it. I don't want that this year. Happy reading year to you too!

  2. I need to catch up on SOOOOO many series this year. I love series, but I always seem to get lost somewhere in the middle of them then I forget who's who and what's what so I have to go back and re-read and yeah ... it's a never-ending problem. I'm glad someone else understands my pain :)

My GR Challenge goal is 200 books. We'll see.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Wow 200 books! You reading machine! I agree about the series...if I like a series I will marathon all the available books straight away, otherwise I fall out of love with the world and forget everything that happened. I understand the pain, don't you worry!

  5. I think your reading goals are totally available! They're also very sensible so go you.

I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and after it got going I loved it, but I never read on. I am terrible at finishing series, so I wish you all of the luck that I don't have.

And I'm going to throw some audio recs at you:
Gilded Cage by Vic James, read by Avita Jay
Nina is Not Okay by Shappi Khorsandi, read by Shappi Khorsandi
Slated by Teri Terry, read by Kathryn Drysdale

  6. I do love that we have that identical 'buy less, read more' goal. We can TOTALLY do this, right? Right! We just have to ignore #ALLTHEBOOKS. Love your other goals as well, good luck!!

    1. I laughed when I saw that too! And of course we can do it, I have all the faith in us to succeed and if not we can cry into our over-bearing TBR piles together because what else are friends for?

  7. I also love buying books and it is hard to go to a bookstore and not walk away with at least a few. I've begun taking a notebook with me specifically for the purpose of writing down everything I want but refraining from actually purchasing. I don't have room on my shelves!

  11. I wish I'd be better at listening to audio books. My mind just wanders... and then I miss half the book. Good luck with your goals!

    1. I know exactly what you mean...sometimes I can be listening to an audiobook and completely zone out for a good few minutes...then I have to rewind it and listen again! It's definitely worth giving a real go to though, I love them.

  12. I *love* your goal of really appreciating the words in the books that you are reading. That is a goal of mine this year as well. I am starting a quote journal too to keep track of which quotes I love, and planning blog posts and YT videos where I can share them with others. Good luck with your 2018 goals!
